Fieldwalking

Searching for surface finds near Basingstoke.

Fieldwalking is great for beginners and experienced alike and is a superb introduction to archaeological fieldwork.

You can learn the principles behind setting up an efficient sampling programme as well as learning how to identify flint tools and different types of pottery from prehistoric to modern.  Sometimes other finds are made, such as coins and small metal objects.

It’s a great way of getting fresh air and making new friends.

BAHS members continue to carry out fieldwalks in the countryside surrounding Basingstoke.

The end results help us interpret archaeological activity and are recorded and then stored on Hampshire’s Historic Environment Record.
